Now that Christmas is just round the corner, many readers are picking up books that revolve around the spirit of Christmas! And I am no exception; Christmas time is a joyful time and apart from the fact that these books I’ll be recommending will prove to be great to cozy up with under a blanket, maybe you could also gift one or two! So without further ado, let’s go to the magical world of books! PS. Reading the books with Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker plating in the background will only add to the ambience! I have tried to keep the list in ascending order of age, even though some are classics and can be read by all age groups.
A Christmas Carol : No Christmas reading can truly be ever complete without a mention of this classic and perhaps the shortest novel by Dickens. Did you know that Scrooge originated in this beloved tale?
The Nutcracker and the Mouse King : A much adapted story by E.T.A. Hoffmann, Christmas is never complete in my house without playing Tchaikovsky’s ballet in the background. This book is a personal favourite : I am very biased : but I would definitely recommend this tale too! The Disney short film as well as the actual ballet performance are also magical!
The Elves and the Shoemaker : A Grimms’ fairytale, this one is an embodiment of the Christmas spirit of kindness and love! You can also read it out loud to the kids!
The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle : Here is one mystery story for the fans out there! And do you know who it is by? Arthur Conan Doyle, so make sure to keep an eye out for the English Consulting Detective in a deerskin cap!
Pride and Prejudice and Mistletoe : A Christmas retelling of the most famous Austen novel, this book is a modern setting with inverted roles! Curious? I leave the rest for you to find out!
My True Love Gave to Me — Twelve Holiday Stories : Edited by Stephanie Perkins, this anthology contains stories by favourite authors like Jenny Han, Rainbow Rowell, Holly Black, Laini Taylor, etc. This also makes for a good gift!
Miracle on 34th Street : A marathon session of the book and then the movie would be perfect with the family and lots of popcorn!
Silent Night: The Story of the WWI Christmas Truce : A truly touching real incident when the famous truce broke out in the trenches, this book is sure to pull at your heartstrings.
The Ghost of Christmas Past : A mystery novel by Rhys Bowen, this is a surefire for the fans of Truly Devious, which took the YA fandom by storm. I personally am looking forward to making my mother read this soon!
The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society : Although this book is not the exact Christmas book to pick up, I have somehow always associated it with this time of the year. The book is as beautiful as the movie, if not more.
